This small horn produces an extremely loud blast with very little lung power. It is so loud, that I would suspect it could be damaging to your hearing. Keep in mind that you have to blow into the side of it so the horn is only inches away from your ears. What I have done to correct this is attach a pair of chain saw ear plugs to horn's string. While these small ear plugs are not as effective as silencing ear muffs, they certainly are better than nothing. There is nothing wrong with the canister type of safety horn either, other than they could unexpectedly run out of propellant when you need it the most, so at the very least I would still have this small, reliable horn on board my boat as a secondary, if not a primary sound source. I liked this product very much as it is inexpensive, conveniently small, does what it is supposed to do, and does it very well. I suspect the poor rating given to this product was do to a defective/ruptured diagram and would have to be considered defective. Under no circumstances should one poke a small object i.e. a opened paper clip into the end of the horn.
